Over-Wrought

Two definitions for that.  Over-wrought, as in overworked and exhausted.  And over-wrought as in too much black wrought iron.  As far as the first definition goes, yes, I am overworked and exhausted from all the house cleaning and dealing with the decks and staining and a month of hard graft, blah, blah, blah.  As far as the second definition goes, I was not too keen on the fence this morning.  It was just one more frigging bunch of black stuff:  Black rails on the front deck, black rails on the back deck, now black fencing.  Overkill.  What the hell were we thinking..??

Then, Miguel and Darryl finished the fence this afternoon--in 90+ degree heat, I might add, (yes, again..!!)--and suddenly things didn't look so bad.  Then Alan removed this weird little picket fence the elderly couple had hammered into the slope, and it transformed everything.

Part of the problem for me at the moment is the landscaping.  I'm having trouble picturing what to do with the slope(s), what plants to get that the deer won't eat, how to fix that pathway from the back deck to the lower garden area, how to block the neighbor guy's looming house from overshadowing our space, etc., etc.  What I really want is the "After" picture...you know..??  All the work over and a beautiful backyard.  Or better yet: a landscape guru who will know exactly what to do..!!

Some photos.

Up at 6:30am this morning (because it was too hot to sleep).  Looked out the window to see we were floating above the clouds again.  It was beautiful.

The fence going up the slope to meet the deck.  Ignore that hideous death trap pathway.  That's next week's project...assuming we can figure out what, exactly, to replace it with.

Another angle of the fence, across the straight bit of the garden.  This is also the same view of the valley from this morning.  Amazing how deep the cloud/fog layer was.  Love seeing through the rails.

In this photo, you can see the lame little picket fence in the lower left-hand corner, behind the new fence.  It ran along the edge of the garden slope, serving no purpose whatsoever, and very much detracting from the overall effect.

Regardless of the brain melting heat, Alan the Intrepid got out there and removed it.  At one point I asked him if I could get him a cold bottle of water.  He said all he needed was a defibrillator.

There was also some rubber edging stuff that seemed to annoy him no end, so that had to go, too.  We thought it would come up easily, but apparently its been in the ground since the dinosaurs, and required heavy-duty shovel work.  I went for the water at this point.

I'm very much looking forward to the family gathering tomorrow, if for no other reason than I can bloody stop working..!!  It will be great to see my sister, brother-in-law and Mom.  Maybe they'll have some brilliant idea for the Path of Doom...and the landscaping.  I can only hope someone will.

On a happy, closing note:  The shipping folks called yesterday and thankfully our stuff will be delivered in about three weeks.  I can't wait.  It seems like months ago that everything was packed up and taken away.  Oh wait.  It was..!!  Seriously, by the time we get our goods, it will be very close to 4 months.  We were told 6-8 weeks.  Quite a disparity.  Maybe the shipping people live in an alternate dimension where time moves at a different speed...??  I'll be so, so happy to get my cookware, and clothes, and my books.  It will be like an early Christmas.  Well, other than all the work.  Sigh.
